Indian Starters and Snacks Worth Sharing

Onion bhaji served with a dipping sauce

The start of an Indian meal is half the fun. Before the curries arrive, there is a whole category of crisp, spiced, shareable things designed to be passed around the table with a cold drink.

The crisp ones

Poppadoms with chutneys are the traditional opener - light, crunchy and built for dipping. Then there are bhajis and pakoras: onion, vegetable or paneer fritters, fried until crisp and served hot.

From the tandoor

The grill turns out some of the best starters - chicken tikka, seekh kebab, tandoori wings, paneer tikka. Smoky, charred and easy to share, they are a meal in themselves if you order a few.

Built for sharing

The point of a starter spread is variety. Order a mix - something crisp, something from the tandoor, a couple of chutneys - and let everyone pick. It is the most sociable way to begin.
