An Indian menu can look long and a little daunting the first time. It needn't be. A good order follows a simple shape, and the staff are always happy to steer you. Here is how to put together a meal you will enjoy.
Think in balance
The trick is variety, not volume. Aim for one creamy dish, one drier or grilled dish, a vegetable or dal, a rice, and a bread between you. That spread covers every texture and lets everyone mix and match across the table.
How much to order
A useful rule for two people: two mains, one rice, one bread, and a starter to share. For larger groups, order a few more mains than people and share everything. Indian food is built for the middle of the table, not for one plate each.
If you are unsure on spice
Tell your server how you feel about heat - they will guide you. Creamy dishes like butter chicken and korma are gentle; a vindaloo or jalfrezi brings the fire. You can almost always ask for a dish milder or hotter.
Where to start
If it is your first time, a tandoori starter, a butter chicken, a dal, a portion of pilau rice and a garlic naan is a near-perfect introduction. Browse our menu and do not be shy about asking at Charing Cross or Soho.
